MANY DEVICES, ONE COUNSEL
““There are many devices in a man’s heart; nevertheless the counsel of the LORD, that shall stand.””
Your plans are welcome, but God’s counsel is final.
There is nothing wrong with having plans. The Bible never rebukes a man for setting goals, drawing up strategies or dreaming big. The proverb for today simply reminds us of a hierarchy: there are many devices in a man’s heart, nevertheless the counsel of the Lord shall stand. Our ideas are welcome, but His counsel is final.
The danger arises when a heart becomes so full of its own devices that there is no room left for God’s voice. Many people pray, “Lord, bless my plan,” when they should be praying, “Lord, what is Your plan?” The first prayer asks God to endorse our decision; the second invites Him to direct it. James warns those who boast about tomorrow without acknowledging that everything depends on the Lord’s will (James 4:13-15).
When you bring your plans before God, He does one of three things. He confirms them, and you move forward with peace. He corrects them, adjusting the timing, the method or the people involved. Or He replaces them altogether with something better than you imagined. In every case you gain, because you avoid the cost of pursuing what would not stand.
Begin this week by writing down the major plans in your heart, whether career, family, business or ministry. Lay them before the Lord in prayer, asking Him to confirm, correct or replace. Then wait for His answer, and hold your plans with an open hand. What God confirms will succeed, and what He redirects will spare you painful detours.
Every plan aligned with God’s counsel in my life prospers. I will not labour in vain, for the counsel of the Lord shall stand in my life. Amen.
