THE SPIRIT OF COUNSEL
““And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD.””
Counsel is a dimension of the Spirit’s work in a man.
Isaiah describes the Spirit of the Lord resting on the coming Messiah in a sevenfold way: the Spirit of the Lord, wisdom, understanding, counsel, might, knowledge and the fear of the Lord. Counsel is one dimension of the Spirit’s work. When Jesus walked the earth, He never made a hasty or foolish decision, because He moved under the Spirit of counsel.
Notice that counsel is paired with might. This pairing is deliberate. Counsel tells you what to do, and might gives you the power to do it. Direction without strength leads to frustration, while strength without direction leads to wasted energy. God does not only show us the path; He empowers us to walk it. As Paul prays, we are strengthened with might by His Spirit in the inner man (Ephesians 3:16).
Zechariah 4:6 states the principle from another angle: it is not by might, nor by power, but by the Spirit of the Lord. Many believers try to fulfil God’s assignments in human strength and become exhausted. Others wait for strength without first receiving direction and become stagnant. The Spirit of counsel and might supplies both, so that we act at the right time, in the right way, with the right power.
Ask the Holy Spirit today for both. Pray specifically over the areas where you feel unsure of the way and the areas where you feel unable to continue. Expect Him to give clarity and strength. The same Spirit who rested upon the Messiah has been given to you, and He delights to counsel and empower the people of God.
The Spirit of counsel and might rests upon me. I receive divine direction and divine strength for every assignment. Amen.
