LEANING OFF YOUR OWN UNDERSTANDING
““Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.””
Acknowledging God in everything opens the way to straight paths.
Few verses are as loved, and as difficult to live, as this one. Solomon gives four instructions: trust the Lord with all your heart, do not lean on your own understanding, acknowledge Him in all your ways, and expect Him to direct your paths. Each one is a step in a single journey from self-reliance to divine guidance.
Trusting with all the heart means holding nothing back, not trusting God in the big decisions while keeping private control over the small ones. Leaning on your own understanding means placing your full weight on a support that is far more fragile than it looks. Proverbs 14:12 warns that there is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death. Feelings, experience and logic are valuable, but they are not infallible.
God’s ways are higher than ours, as the prophet says: “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways” (Isaiah 55:9). This does not mean we stop thinking. It means we think under His authority. Abraham went out not knowing where he was going (Hebrews 11:8), yet he was not foolish; he was following the One who knew. Trust often means taking the next step God has shown while the full route remains unseen.
The phrase “in all thy ways” includes the choices we consider too small to pray about: which job to accept, which person to hire, how to handle a conflict, where to spend the weekend. God’s promise is to direct paths, and He is faithful to those who consistently acknowledge Him. Practise today the habit of a quick prayer before every decision, and watch your paths straighten.
I trust in the Lord with all my heart. He directs my paths, and every crooked way before me is made straight. Amen.
