SAFETY IN GODLY COUNSELLORS
““Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.””
God often speaks through people, so isolation is dangerous.
Some believers say, “I only need God.” It sounds spiritual, but the Bible does not support isolation. God Himself established pastors, elders, teachers and wise friends as channels of His counsel. Proverbs 11:14 is direct: where there is no counsel, the people fall. The word “fall” describes a collapse that could have been prevented by wise voices.
The strength of the verse lies in the word “safety.” Counsellors protect us from blind spots, and everyone has them. We cannot see our own faces without a mirror, and we often cannot see our own weaknesses without the eyes of others. Proverbs 27:17 says that iron sharpens iron, so a man sharpens the countenance of his friend. Wise counsel also refreshes; Proverbs 27:9 says the sweetness of a friend’s hearty counsel is like ointment and perfume that rejoice the heart.
The key word, however, is “godly.” Not every voice deserves to be a counsellor. Look for people who fear God, know the Word, have proven character, and are willing to tell you the truth in love. The Bereans, praised in Acts 17:11, listened to Paul with readiness but searched the Scriptures daily to see whether the things he said were so. Even the best counsel must be tested by the Word.
Ask yourself who your counsellors are. If you cannot name at least two or three mature believers who can speak honestly into your life, make it a matter of prayer this week. Ask God to connect you, and then be willing to be vulnerable. Pride isolates and leaves us exposed, but humility invites the safety that God has provided.
I am safe because I walk with godly counsel. I will not fall through lack of wise voices in my life. Amen.
